One-Act Play Contests






  1. Acting Value: About 60%
    1. Voice
      1. Could you hear the performers distinctly?
      2. Was the rate too fast or too slow?
      3. Was there a variety of rate and inflection?
      4. Was pronunciation and articulation properly done for each character?
      5. If dialect was used, was it done correctly and naturally?
    2. Characterization
      1. Was there a complete physical and mental re-creation of the character by the performer?
      2. Were reactions to other performer's correct and effective?
      3. Did we "believe" the performer's characterization at all times?
    3. Movement
      1. Were the movements of the performer in keeping with the character?
      2. Was there a great deal of random movement?
      3. Was the pantomime accurate and convincing?
      4. Did the performer seem to have a well-controlled, poised body?
    4. Contrast
      1. Were there clearly contrasting moods in the dialogue?
      2. Were emotional transitions natural and effective?
      3. Were the lines delivered in a manner which seemed natural to the characters in this play?
    5. Ensemble
      1. Did you feel a smoothness of action which indicates adequate rehearsal and close cooperation and understanding among the performers?
      2. Was it a closely knit, rhythmically correct show?
    6. Timing
      1. Did the performers pick up cues properly?
      2. Did the movements of the performers slow down the tempo of the show?
      3. Was the production static in places because the actors seemed to lack a correct sense of pace?
    7. Motivation
      1. Was there a logical reason for all business and movement by the actors which was consistent and in keeping with the characters of the play?
  2. Directing and stage mechanics. Value: about 40%
    1. Set
      1. Within limitations of contest rules, did the set satisfactorily represent the idea of the play?
      2. Were properties used in a way which assisted and did not hinder the action?
    2. Lighting
      1. Did the lighting effects blend harmoniously and unobtrusively into the action of the play?
      2. Were there effects which were so obvious that they called attention to themselves and took your attention away from the action of the play? (The use of elaborate lighting effects will be disregarded by the judge. The play must not be discounted because of the inadequate lighting control or equipment. Faulty lighting effects over which the director has no control should not affect the decision or be a major critique consideration.)
    3. Sound
      1. Did the sound effects blend harmoniously and unobtrusively into the action of the play?
      2. Were there effects which were so obvious that they called attention to themselves and took your attention away from the action of the play?
    4. Make-up
      1. Was the make-up natural and in keeping with each character?
    5. Costume
      1. Were the costumes for each character correct as to color, style, and period? (The use of elaborate costumes must not affect the final decision of the judge.)
    6. Business
      1. Were exits and entrances properly timed?
      2. Did the actors frequently cover or block each other?
      3. Was the business properly motivated?
      4. Was the designed business adequate to bring out the idea of the play?
    7. Tempo
      1. Did the play as a whole drag?
      2. Was it too fast to follow intelligently?
      3. Was the pace of the play in keeping with the general idea of the play?
      4. Was the tempo fast enough for farce?
      5. Did it end to become slower for tragedy?
      6. Were the subclimaxes and the climax well developed?
    8. Composition
      1. Were the actors grouped to give proper emphasis to the right characters at the right time?
    9. Theme
      1. Did the play strongly challenge the abilities of the actors?
      2. Was the main idea or theme of the play projected?
